*Harpreet’s Long Battle for Freedom*

Harpreet Singh, a Pahadi youth, worked at a restaurant in Sharjah for one and a half years. Promised ₹20,000 salary in India, he received only 800 Dirhams monthly, paid irregularly. He worked 14-16 hours daily with no day off and ₹35,000 visa charges were deducted from his salary. When he asked to return to India, the owner threatened to file a case, jail him for a year, and keep his passport.
Team Samoon filed a complaint with the Ministry of Labour on 10 March 2016. The owner skipped the 3 April hearing. In the second hearing, his representative was ordered to cancel the visa and return the passport, but nothing happened. Further hearings on 7 and 10 April also failed as the owner remained absent and the case was closed.
We approached the Indian Consulate, Dubai, and police, but the owner still refused. A fresh complaint was filed on 18 April. After repeated pressure from the Consulate, the visa was cancelled on 29 April — yet the passport was not returned. Harpreet had been thrown out of his room on 10 March and lived hungry on the streets for three months, unpaid for the last three months too.
The owner finally agreed to give the passport only if Harpreet bought his own ticket first. With no guarantee of release, Team Samoon purchased his ticket and sent him safely back to India on 3 May 2016.

*हरप्रीत की आज़ादी की लंबी लड़ाई*

शारजाह के एक रेस्टोरेंट में काम करने वाला पहाड़ी युवक हरप्रीत सिंह पिछले डेढ़ साल से शोषण झेल रहा था। भारत में 20 हजार रुपये सैलरी का वादा कर उसे सिर्फ 800 दिरहम मिलते थे, वो भी अनियमित। 14-16 घंटे काम, एक भी छुट्टी नहीं, और 35,000 रुपये वीजा चार्ज उसकी सैलरी से काटे जा रहे थे। भारत लौटने की बात पर मालिक ने केस कर एक साल जेल भेजने और पासपोर्ट न देने की धमकी दी।
टीम समून ने 10 मार्च 2016 को मिनिस्ट्री ऑफ लेबर में केस दर्ज किया। 3 अप्रैल की सुनवाई में मालिक नहीं आया। दूसरी सुनवाई में प्रतिनिधि को वीजा कैंसल कर पासपोर्ट लौटाने का आदेश मिला, पर अमल नहीं हुआ। 7 और 10 अप्रैल की सुनवाई में भी मालिक गैरहाजिर रहा और केस बंद हो गया।
हमने इंडियन काउंसलेट, दुबई व पुलिस से मदद मांगी, लेकिन मालिक नहीं माना। 18 अप्रैल को दोबारा कंप्लेंट की। काउंसलेट के दबाव के बाद 29 अप्रैल को वीजा कैंसल हुआ, पर पासपोर्ट नहीं मिला। हरप्रीत को 10 मार्च को ही कमरे से निकाल दिया गया था और वह तीन महीने से भूखा-प्यासा सड़कों पर था। आखिरी तीन महीने की सैलरी भी नहीं मिली।
आखिरकार मालिक इस शर्त पर माना कि पहले टिकट खरीद कर एयरपोर्ट पर दिया जाए। पासपोर्ट मिलने की तारीख तय न होने से हरप्रीत परेशान था। अंत में टीम समून ने खुद टिकट खरीदा और 3 मई 2016 को उसे सकुशल भारत भेजा।
